The start of any new year always makes people look at what is coming up. In the boxing world, the year 2022 is set to be full of excitement, with plenty of big fights in the offing.

Of course, drama around boxing negotiations is as old as time. But there are some fights that are set in stone and a real treat to look forward to in 2022.

In the latest Boxfit blog, we take a look at some of the big bouts to put in your diary for 2022.

Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte

The big news on the upcoming fight front is that the Gypsy King has his next bout sorted.

Tyson Fury has confirmed he will fight Dillian Whyte in a defence of his WBC World Title in the coming months. Though details haven’t been confirmed at time of writing, Cardiff seems a likely venue for the fight, with Fury returning to fight on British soil for the first time since August 2018.

This might not be the big fight with Anthony Joshua that many had hoped for, nor the Heavyweight unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk. Both of those will hopefully come at some point down the line. But it should be a fascinating encounter.

Fury will need to deal with the powerful and precise Whyte, who has been seeking a shot at a World Title for what seems like an eternity. He now has that opportunity, but will need something of an upset to best Fury, who was in imperious form in his back-to-back victories over Deontay Wilder.

Heavyweight boxing is of course a brutal world and surprises are not so rare. Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson, Hasim Rahman knocking out Lennox Lewis, and most recently, Andy Ruiz Jr. beating Anthony Joshua, are all examples of such upsets.

Whyte will be hoping to spring something similar on the Gypsy King, and we at Boxfit are thrilled at the chance to see two of our Boxer Collection fighters going toe-to-toe. You can take a look through our Tyson Fury range here, and our Dillian Whyte range here.

Amir Khan vs Kell Brook

These two fighters are both getting on in years, but that doesn’t take away from what should be a great spectacle on February 19th at the AO Arena in Manchester.

It’s safe to say there is no love lost between the pair, with Brook recently describing the fight as a ‘real grudge match.’

Both fighters are 35 years old now and in the twilight of what are pretty impressive careers. Khan and Brook have fought against the world’s best on numerous occasions, and both have had spells as World Champion in the past.

There might not be too many chances to see Khan and Brook fight again, particularly in a bout as heated and confrontational as this, so it should be well worth a watch.

Josh Warrington vs Kiko Martinez

Josh Warrington has forged a reputation as one of the most explosive featherweights on the planet, and the Leeds native will be looking to get back on track after a couple of frustrating bouts against Mexico’s Mauricio Lara.

Lara inflicted Warrington’s first professional defeat in February 2021, with a rematch in Leeds last September resulting in a draw due to Lara being cut by an accidental clash of heads.

This fight against Spain’s Kiko Martinez gives Warrington the chance to regain the IBF Featherweight title he vacated after frustrations with the IBF regarding a proposed fight with China’s Xu Can.

These two have fought before, with Warrington triumphing in a cagey affair by majority decision back in 2017. This fight, scheduled for 26 March 2022, will take place in Warrington’s home city and is sure to interest the locals!

Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall

Though nothing is confirmed as of yet, this has been lined up as a fight to take place in mid-2022, and would undoubtedly be a huge match up.

The bout would potentially offer the chance for both fighters to unify the women’s middleweight division, with some punters describing it as ‘the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing’.

American Shields has to first overcome Slovenia’s Ema Kozin in what will be her first fight on British soil. But if she defeats Kozin, Shields’ next bout could well be against one of the finest British female fighters out there in the form of Hartlepool’s Savannah Marshall.

Clips on social media have shown Shields getting tips from Floyd Mayweather Jr., so it’s clear she’s pulling out all the stops to get ahead.

Both fighters are undefeated at present, so the prospect of a genuine women’s boxing super fight is sure to whet the appetite in 2022.

Chris Eubank Jr. vs Liam Williams

Another all-British bout for 2022 is Chris Eubank Jr. vs Liam Williams. Though this fight has faced setbacks regarding the date and stadium restrictions in Williams’ home country of Wales, where the fight is due to take place, it should go ahead this year.

A fight with plenty of bad blood, both fighters have said they don’t like the way the other goes about their business in the buildup, adding definite intrigue.

Williams goes into the fight coming off the back of his third career defeat at the hands of America’s Demetrius Andrade. That was Williams’ first fight on US soil, but the familiar sights and sounds of Cardiff should give him confidence going into the confrontation with Eubank Jr.

Eubank Jr. is in good form, with five straight wins after his defeat to George Groves back in February 2018.

Provided the fight gets the green light, it should be a belter.
